Song of the Day: Orange Blossom Special

It’s Sunday and that means that there will be something likely from the past as your featured song. Today we are featuring Johnny Cash. Back in 1965, he released this particular song. It was an old bluegrass/folk song and the date and writer aren’t exactly clear. It’s safe to say that it was written in the 1930’s, but the writer of the song is still up for debate. The writing is credited to Ervin T Rouse, but for many years, Chubby Wise claimed ownership. Apparently Wise and Rouse got together to write this song and Wise and Rouse came up with the melody, then Rouse and his brother wrote lyrics to the song. Rouse copyrighted the song, so credit belongs to him legally. Leon “Pappy“ Selph also claimed that he wrote the song in 1931, when he was only 17 years old. None of their versions ever topped Johnny Cash’s popularity though. This week, I came across a video of Cash and Roy Clark performing the song together in 1978 and decided it was going to be the featured song for today. They did a fantastic job on it and their talent was on full display. I hope you enjoy, and have a great rest of your weekend.
