Rocket Mortgage Classic DFS Preview

After a long, sudden death playoff…your winner of the Travelers was Harris English. Not to brag…but I had him in my lineup. I will say that I was looking for 3 in a row with a Scottie Scheffler prediction, but having English in my lineup made it bittersweet. We will be staying up north geographically speaking, as the PGA Tour makes its way to Detroit, Michigan for the Rocket Mortgage Classic. This tourney was a big deal in 2019 when it hosted its 1st PGA event. Last years winner, Bryson DeChambeau, will be in the field as well as some other top pros. There does seem to be a major gap back behind him though, but in a field of 156 golfers, anyone can win.

Detroit Golf Club is a private course located in Wayne County. Even though 2019 was the first PGA Tour event, the course is historic, as it has been opened since 1899. It has a combination of length and speed…the course plays at around 7,300 yards give or take and has a high green rate with golfers hitting over 80% of the green in 2020. It may be a little different this year as the course has gotten some rain in the days leading up to the tournament. Weather experts are also calling for rain on Thursday, so look out for that. To me, it is difficult to compare this course to others…I mean you could compare grasses and location…but what I care about is pure Tee-to-Green and Driving. The second shot is important, but I think that if you can drive it well, you will compete. Past history at the course will play a factor as well.

Tier 1: Will Zalatoris ($10,000)

This choice happened to be the trickiest one of them all…picking the winner or Tier 1 choice. My winner is not going to be Zalatoris, so tune in to see that surprising choice; however, I do believe Will Zalatoris will ball out this weekend. He ranks in the top-25 in driving distance and is 9th in Tee-to-Green. In a “weaker” field, this is the chance for Zalatoris to get that 1st PGA win. Fade DeChambeau and go with Zalatoris at 22/1.

Tier 2: Doc Redman ($7,900)

Here is your winner folks…Doc Redman finished 2nd in the inaugural Rocket Mortgage Classic is sitting at a nice 50/1 to win. He has made 5 straight cuts and barring a bad Saturday and Sunday…was near the top of the leaderboard last week. In terms of statistics, do not be concerned as Redman started 2021 fairly rocky…but he seems to have found his groove. His iron play has been elite in the last few and I look for that to continue in Detroit.

Tier 3: Will Gordon ($6,600)

Why not…let’s go with Davidson, North Carolina product Will Gordon! He is a bomber, ranking 5th in driving distance. Just like Redman, he was playing well at Travelers, but Saturday and Sunday was pretty dreadful. The pricing is what really swayed me, he finished in the top-15 at Palmetto and he did so with his iron play, not the driver. If both are dialed in…he could contend in Detroit. Great value and odds at 150/1 to win the Rocket Mortgage Classic.
