Song of the Day: Blue Moon of Kentucky

Today’s song of the day is the classic bluegrass song, “Blue Moon of Kentucky,” written by Bill Monroe in 1945 and recorded by his band, the Blue Grass Boys. Since then, many, many covers of this song have been performed, including ones by Elvis Presley, the Stanley Brothers, Patsy Cline, Paul McCartney, and John Fogerty. It was such a huge hit that in 2003, it was ranked by CMT as the #11 Greatest Song of All-Time in Country Music. What inspired me to choose this song as Song of the Day today was watching an episode of King of the Hill where Hank and the gang break out their instruments after learning their neighbors daughter Connie can really play the fiddle. When Boomhauer hops in the microphone to bust out “Blue Moon of Kentucky,” it then transformed into a classic and very entertaining scene. I instantly had to look up whose voice it actually was singing and found out it was Vince Gill. Along with Monroe’s original version, I’ll post Boomhauer’s version below. I hope you enjoy it!
