Farmers Insurance Open DFS Preview

The PGA Tour’s West Coast swing is on its way to Torrey Pines for the Farmers Insurance Open. I have never been to see the San Diego, CA course, but I can say it is on my bucket list. I love these coastal courses…they tend to create awesome tournaments and bring out the best of the best. There is also rain in the forecast for the first couple of days. The North and South courses will be used this weekend, with the North course being a little shorter in length…then the South course is a lengthy one…so my strategy is to pick a good mix of short-game golfers, but have a couple bombers to round out the tourney to create a balanced lineup.

Last week at The American Express…Patrick Reed had a complete meltdown on the second day. With that, my choice was out early. Torrey Pines is pretty different in terms of what you are looking for in a golfer. You want driving accuracy, but even the most accurate of golfers struggle here. I will be looking at Scrambling for those that may miss the green here and there. Putting is a crucial statistic to look at. Also, a golfers ability Around the Green factors into my choices.

Tier 1: Matthew Wolff ($9,100)

Wolff has a game tailored made for Torrey Pines. He is one of the best drivers on the PGA Tour. His putter is solid enough to carry him as well. He does lack in gaining strokes around the green, but I think the driving ability may help him in that. It also helps that he is a California native and has played on courses similar to Torrey Pines. I believe the combination of driving and putting puts Wolff at the top of the leaderboard this weekend…take him at 25/1.

Tier 2: Will Zalatoris ($8,100)

Another California native…Will Zalatoris is an up and coming star. His 6th place finish at the US Open impressed a lot of people in the golfing world. Putting would be considered his weakness…but he doesn’t really lose strokes on the field in that category. He’s a solid player, kind of like a Harris English and with his price point being this low…he’s a real threat to win at 50/1.

Tier 3: Wyndham Clark ($6,800)

Clark is a golfer that would consistently be in my lineups a couple years back. He is a streaky player which is why he is at the Tier 3 level…but when he makes the cut, he can be dangerous. With him having a solid Around the Green and Scrambling game, I could not resist him at the sub $7k range. His game is similar to Wolff, but he does lack the putting skills Wolff has. Clark is a long-shot to win at 150/1.
