2020 WWE Power Rankings Midseason Breakdown

Happy Independence Day everyone! Alright guys, the time to look at the last 6 months in the WWE is now. It has been a strange few months and I think a lot of things would have been completely different under normal circumstances, but here we are. I released the AEW Power Rankings just a couple days ago and I can say, it was a lot easier to rank and organize than this one. WWE has quite a bit larger roster potential to be ranked and the fact that it is a Top 10 instead of a Top 5 makes things more interesting at the 6-month checkpoints. I didn’t put it in the AEW article, but there were 38 performers that had an appearance in the AEW Power Rankings in the last 6 months. WWE had 94. It is insane to compare the two, but this isn’t what the Power Rankings are about. Some of the WWE Top 10 was surprising, but most of the performers that are there aren’t shocking. One shocking thing was the fact that the women’s division put in the work. The majority of Top 10 is women. I didn’t quite expect it, but since the pandemic, they have been featured a lot on TV. This is also the first 6-month period in which NXT was a factor, but surprisingly, they weren’t represented in the Top 10. It was very close for 2 competitors, but they fell just short. Just a reminder, I judge my week-to-week rankings on their impact every week (i.e. mostly in-ring competition), so if you notice some of the bigger players aren’t in the Top 10, don’t be alarmed. The Midseason Top 10 is taken from my compiled list of appearances in my weekly Power Rankings and number one appearances serve as a tiebreaker. If a tie is still not broken, it moves to number two appearances, and so on. Now that all of this is out of the way, here is the 2020 WWE Power Rankings Midseason Breakdown.

Here are some competitors that just missed the cut

6 Appearances:  Randy Orton, John Morrison, and Daniel Bryan

2020 WWE Power Rankings Midseason Breakdown

-       10: Sasha Banks (7 Appearances)

WWE

WWE

With the amount of matches that Sasha has been featured in lately, it wasn’t a surprise to find her in the Top 10. The Boss has been in a lot of great tag team action so far in 2020, despite not really being that active in the first 3 months of the year. Although the idea of she and Bayley splitting up has been toyed with, I personally don’t think it will happen in the near future. I think they will split once crowds start coming back at full capacity, because that would be a feud that you would want to have crowd reaction of. In a couple weeks, she will compete for the RAW Women’s Championship and it wouldn’t be a shock to see Banks and Bayley holding all of the women’s titles on the main roster. I guess we’ll see how all of that unfolds in the coming weeks and months, but don’t expect Sasha Banks to be featured less in the second half.

-       9: Bray Wyatt (7 Appearances)

WWE

WWE

I don’t think anyone expected to see The Fiend dropping the Universal Championship to Goldberg and I think I will always feel like that was a mistake, but it happened and Wyatt’s appearance totals may have taken a hit because of it. If it wouldn’t have happened, I think he and Roman Reigns would’ve found themselves in the Top 5 as a result. Also, Wyatt doesn’t compete in a ton of televised matches, so it does somewhat hurt his appearance total. He had an entertaining feud with John Cena, which culminated at this year’s WrestleMania and he has had a great feud with Braun Strowman over the last couple months. It wouldn’t shock me to see Wyatt out of the Top 10 when the Year-End article comes out, but then again, him missing out on the Yearly Top 10 wouldn’t be shocking either.

-       8: Lacey Evans (7 Appearances; 1 Number One)

WWE

WWE

Lacey Evans is one of the few workhorses in the women’s division. She has been featured nearly every week in some capacity and somehow it surprises me that she is in the Top 10. Lacey is one of my favorite women’s wrestlers, but there is a strong case for her because she has been one of the top acts on SmackDown since the pandemic. Her biggest feud was with Bayley earlier in the year and Sasha Banks was in the mix as well. She had a brief feud with Sonya Deville that lasted a couple weeks, but other than that, she isn’t currently in a feud with anyone. She has had opportunities at the women’s titles and I think her time will come sooner rather than later. As far as entertainment goes, she and Asuka are on a different planet compared to the other active women’s wrestlers. Lacey understands how to be seen and heard and that will help her moving forward. Unless she is competing for another title within the next 6 months, I wouldn’t expect her at the Year-End article, but don’t count her out.

-       7: Charlotte Flair (7 Appearances; 1 Number One)

WWE

WWE

The fact that Charlotte Flair has only had 1 Number One in a year and six months is more surprising than the fact that she is in the Top 10 in the last 6 months. Charlotte is currently taking a little time off, but she was and is still at the top of the women’s division. I feel like the only reason she isn’t in the Top 5 is because I expect her to perform well at this point. There weren’t any performers from NXT featured, but if you count Charlotte, which I don’t, she was the only one featured for a limited time on the show in the Top 10. She was the NXT Women’s Champion for a little over two months and had a great feud with Rhea Ripley and Io Shirai. I don’t know how long Charlotte will be out of action, but this may be the last we see of her in 2020 in terms of the Power Rankings. I don’t think that is the case and it appears that she is just taking a little time off.

-       6:  Braun Strowman (9 Appearances)

WWE

WWE

The current Universal Champion has been one of the main beneficiaries of the Covid-19 pandemic. He found his way into a title match at WrestleMania after Roman Reigns pulled himself out of the match with Goldberg. Strowman defeated Goldberg for the title and has held it ever since. He has feuded with Bray Wyatt ever since with a short-term bout with Miz and Morrison thrown in there. Personally, I don’t like the way they book Strowman, but it is good seeing him get a shot with a major title. When the time comes for Strowman to face The Fiend, I expect him to lose the title, but if and/or when that happens I still think Strowman has a good shot to stay in the Top 10 at the end of the year.

-       5: Becky Lynch (9 Appearances; 1 Number One)

Becky Lynch almost seems like a forgotten name and her situation is unlike one that we’ve been accustomed to. If Becky were able to compete, I would’ve expected her to be in the Top 3. Since she announced her pregnancy on RAW nearly a couple months ago, the women’s division and the WWE as a whole haven’t been the same. Her feud with Shayna Baszler consumed the majority of her in-ring action in 2020 and she relinquished the title after her win at WrestleMania. The Man has taken her brand to another level over the last couple years and this new chapter in her life will be interesting. I think I can speak for a lot of fans when I say, we can’t wait for her to return, but until then, we’ll be waiting.

-       4: Seth Rollins (9 Appearances; 2 Number Ones)

I was surprised to see that Seth Rollins was only 4th in the Midseason Top 10. I thought he was a lock for the Top 3, but he wasn’t that far off. Rollins has been a huge beneficiary of the pandemic and has been on TV basically every week. Although his feuds have been somewhat wishy-washy, he has been consistently a part of the RAW programming. He had a long feud with Kevin Owens and is currently in one with Rey Mysterio. He also competed for the WWE Championship against Drew McIntyre. Rollins is a workhorse and locker room leader and his involvement is pertinent to the WWE. I think he’ll maintain his status as a Top 10 guy for the rest of the year, unless something drastic happens.

-       3: Asuka (10 Appearances; 1 Number One)

Asuka’s entertainment value is the big reason why she is the RAW Women’s Champion. She held the Women’s Tag Team Championship with Kairi Sane earlier in the year until WrestleMania, won the Women’s Money in the Bank match. The MITB contained the RAW Women’s Championship that Becky Lynch relinquished and Asuka has held it ever since. Her only real feud has been with Nia Jax since winning the title and currently she going to face Sasha Banks at Extreme Rules. She may not hold the title for much longer, but If I had my say, she would be champ until the end of the year. I expect her to stay in the Top 10.

-       2: Bayley (12 Appearances)

WWE

WWE

Bayley Dos Straps comes in at number two and it isn’t a shock, but it is weird seeing someone so high up not having one number one appearances. Nevertheless, with the exception of Becky Lynch, she has been the most dominant woman on the roster since 2019 and while that may be weird to say, the numbers back it up. Also, it seems that she has a new level of confidence in the new look WWE. Hopefully she can carry this momentum when live crowds are back. Bayley is almost guaranteed to stay in the Top 10 unless something drastic happens. At the moment, there isn’t one person on the roster who can take her down, unless it’s Sasha Banks.

-       1: Drew McIntyre (21 Appearances; 3 Number Ones)

mcintyregiftitle.gif

This was no surprise to anyone I imagine. Drew McIntyre has been the key force behind WWE’s continuation during the pandemic. McIntyre was included in all but 5 weeks and that is crazy to think about, especially since I added NXT to the fold. McIntyre’s 2020 has been something special and it all started with him winning the Royal Rumble. His feud with Brock Lesnar was incredible and he beat Lesnar at WrestleMania to earn his first WWE Championship. He has held the title ever since and it would surprise me to see him lose it in 2020. He has since feuded with Bobby Lashley and Seth Rollins and is currently scheduled for a bout with his old tag team partner, Dolph Ziggler. After Ziggler, I don’t know what is next for Drew McIntyre, but this is his year and unless he gets injured, I don’t see anyone knocking him out of the number one spot.
