Movie Review: Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution

Mewtwo Strikes Back: Evolution

2019

In 1999 Pokemon, the first movie Mewtwo Strikes Back was released in theaters around the U.S. A Warner Bros. Picture was the first animated movie following a successful cartoon series originating in Japan. As many of you know, Pokemon was huge in the late 1990s following the first season released in the U.S. The series featured main character Ash Ketchum and his two friends as he journeyed to be a pokemon master. I won't go into a lot of detail regarding the series, but if you didn't grow up with it and want to see what captivated millions of children in the 90's and early 2000's go check it out.

Back to the movie, Mewtwo strikes back is about a clone of legendary Pokemon Mew realizing that he is much more than a clone and a science experiment. He eventually breaks free and leads a group of trainers to his doorstep to prove once and for all who is superior. Among the trainers are Ash and his two friends Misty and Brock, along with their pokemon companions. In 1998 when it was released in November, the movie grossed 172.7 million in box office sales.

As a child, I remember the movie very vividly since I enjoyed watching Pokemon. In July of 2019, Mewtwo strikes back was rereleased with CGI characters to provide and new, more realistic experience. After hearing about the release, I did not want to go and watch the movie immediately. Like several of my peers that grew up in the 90s, we are pretty stubborn when it comes to certain things. A good motto we like to follow is " if it ain't broke, don't fix it." Pokemon, the first movie, was amazing in its own right, and to think that it would be remade had me a bit mad.

After neglecting to go and see the movie when it was released, I stumbled upon it on Netflix in the first week of March. Since I had nothing else pressing to watch, I decided to give it a chance. To my surprise, it was a pretty good watch. After getting over the animation, everything else was nearly identical to the original film. I would say of you are/were a Pokemon fan and want to feel a little nostalgic, then give the movie a chance. If you have a Netflix subscription, it does not cost anything extra except your time to watch and for that this movie is worth it.
