WrestleMania 39 Recap: Roman Reigns Remains Champ; KO and Sami End The Usos' Historic Tag Team Reign

Wow… I am baffled. Despite my being baffled I will say that WrestleMania 39 was a very, very good show. Every match had something in it that made it must watch. When looking at the entire show it didn’t miss, however, fans will remember the last thing that we see. While they don’t have to book everything the fans want to see, they let the last visual of the night be something that they didn’t want to see. I don’t care who wins match, I just want it to make sense. A lot of fans will be quick to dismiss the efforts of the whole show and everyone that made it possible and I don’t want to do that. The show was fantastic. I’m just saying that the balloon was full and they decided to poke it with a needle instead of letting it fly in the main event of Night 2. Also, it is crazy that WWE announced that they are being sold to Endeavor and merging with UFC today and nobody is talking about it. They are talking about the ending of the main event. I know that is the way they planned it too because they want fans distracted by the product rather than the business side of it. I can’t say that is a bad thing. I don’t want to discuss the sale of the company though, I want to breakdown both nights of WrestleMania. I haven’t been doing reaction articles in a long time, but I felt like I had to for this weekend’s WrestleMania. I will briefly discuss my thoughts on each match/segment and give my take on how it all went down. Let’s dive in.

NIGHT 1

WWE

-       Cena and Theory Underwhelmingly Kick Off the Action

We got a legend and a legend in the making for the opener of Night 1. John Cena challenged Austin Theory for the United States Championship and it had a lot of hype surrounding it. I personally do not think it lived up to the hype. It was very underwhelming and looking back, it was lost in the shuffle. They definitely had the potential to create something special, but it was just, meh… Theory winning was the right call, because Cena isn't allowing himself to perform the way he used to perform, and it is kind of sad to see.

WWE

-       The Street Profits Want All of the Smoke; Win WrestleMania Showcase

The Street Profits win the shortest “advertised” match in Night 1 and the match was fine for what it was. Only bragging rights were attached to this contest and it wasn’t going to mean a lot for any of the competitors, but I think the biggest thing that people were expecting was more of a rift between Otis and Chad Gable. It didn’t happen. Gable was my performer of the match and a nice singles run for him is long overdue. He is so talented.  The Street Profits will likely get a shot at the tag belts in the not so distant future.

WWE

-       Rollins Ruins Logan Paul’s Birthday and Earns First WrestleMania Win in 4 Years

Rollins burns it down in his match with famous YouTuber Logan Paul. Paul has been super entertaining in his matches up to this point and this match was no exception. KSI appeared in the contest as a bottle of PRIME and that was an interesting twist to the match. Also, Logan Paul entered the ring via zip-line, which was pretty cool. I don’t know if Logan Paul will re-sign with the WWE, but no matter what anyone says, he is a natural in this business. They can definitely continue to utilize him if he is interested. As for Rollins, we’ll see what is next for him, but don’t expect him to go away. He will always be in the mix.

WWE

-       The Legends Emerge Victorious Over Damage CTRL

There were no real surprises here, but it was a cool match. Trish and Lita still have it and Becky was the perfect person to pair them up with. Bayley, Kai and Sky all had great matches and I don’t know where they go from here, but all of them benefitted greatly by sharing the ring with these legends.

WWE

-       Father Teaches Son a Lesson with the Help of a Guest Spanish Commentator

The Mysterio match was great. I thought Dominik was going to win, but Rey was the victor and it was the second-best storyline on the card. Having the whole Mysterio family involved was awesome and I think the went as smooth as it could’ve. It was just old-school wrestling at its finest. Rey couldn’t have done it without the help of Special Guest Spanish Commentator Bad Bunny and the new Latino World Order. I was worried that Rey took a bad bump in the bottom turnbuckle, but luckily he was OK, and the match continued without a hitch. Dom’s police escort entrance was great and added more heat to his side of things and Rey and Snoop Dogg coming out in a low rider with Eddie Guerrero’s music was awesome. I never thought I would hear that music again entering the ring. The newly-inducted HOFer beat his son, just like he used to in WWE 13.

WWE

-       WrestleMania 36 Rematch Goes Rhea Ripley’s Way in Match of the Night

In my prediction article, I said that WrestleMania 36’s match between Flair and Ripley was the best on the card. I could argue that it was the best of WrestleMania 39’s card as well. It was an incredible match and fans will be revisiting it for many years. The match nearly last 24 minutes and was non-stop from the beginning. It was Rhea’s moment to shine and I’m glad she got the win over Charlotte. Both ladies put on a wonderful performance. I can't wait to see how Rhea’s reign as champ goes.

WWE

-       Pat McAfee Pays an Unscheduled Visit to The Miz and 80,000 Fans

Just before the main event of Night 1, Snoop Dogg introduces Pat McAfee as The Miz’s surprise opponent and the crowd went nuts for the NFL Punting legend. McAfee is one of the most entertaining people on the planet and I’m glad that they feature him in big shows still despite his busy schedule. Hopefully they continue to do so. As for The Miz, we didn’t see the last of him. It was also cool seeing George Kittle get in on the action as well.

WWE

-       Sami and KO Get Emotional in Tag Team Victory over The Usos, Ending Their Dominant Reign

This was a great way to end the first night and I was glad to see KO and Sami get their moment. KO main evented the first night of WrestleMania 38, but I think this one meant a lot more to him. He defeated The Usos, who had the SmackDown titles for over 600 days and the RAW titles for nearly a year. Two guys that came through the same path to the WWE essentially and after 20 years of hard work, they win their first tag belts. A storybook moment for the two. The match was good, but it was going to be more of an emotional investment, rather than a 5-star classic. The Bloodline story is only going to add more layers and we’ll see where it takes us from here. More on that at the end.

NIGHT 2

WWE

-       Brock Defeats Omos in a Quick Opening Big Man Brawl

I wasn’t sure when this match would go on, but it opened the show and that was perfectly fine. I knew it wasn’t going to be a long match, so getting these two going out of the gate was a good decision. I wasn’t expecting a wrestling clinic here. With big men, you expect big moves and feats of power and strength. We received all of that in this contest. Lesnar picks up the win and despite the rumors that this may be his last career match, he assured fans that he isn't done yet. In fact, it appears that the Intercontinental Champion, Gunther is on his radar. Omos took the loss here, but he gained a lot from sharing the ring with Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania.

WWE

-       Rousey Makes Shotzi Tap Out in Women’s WrestleMania Showcase

This match was the worst on the card and I figured it would be going into the show. Not that it was bad, but it had no real potential to be special. You can’t blame these ladies for that though, they did the best they could do given the circumstances. It was thrown together in the span of a couple weeks and was simply going to be nothing more than a time filler. Ronda making someone tap out was always going to be the result. I don’t know if Rousey and Baszler will be next for Becky Lynch and Lita’s tag gold, but I say they are certainly eyeing that possibility. Raquel Rodriguez was my performer of the match in this one, but I like what Chelsea Green did in the match. She plays her gimmick so well.

WWE

-       Gunther Retains in a Brutally Awesome Triple Threat

This match was my kind of wrestling. Hard-hitting opponents that beat the crap out of each other using only the weapons that God gave them. Gunther retaining was the right call and his situation is also another interesting one. Who is going to be the one to take the belt off of him? Is there a guy that can do it? I guess we’ll find out. Gunther is legit. Drew McIntyre and Sheamus have proven many times how awesome they are and I’m glad we got to see these fellas fight it out. I don’t think I would ever get tired of watching matches with any of these performers in the ring.

WWE

-       Bianca Belair Proves to be the ToughEST in RAW Women’s Championship Bout

Asuka was favored against the EST of WWE, but Bianca successfully retained. She carried a full year title reign against The Empress and was expected to drop the title, but Bianca is still your RAW Women’s Champion. I thought both of their entrances were pretty cool and we learned that one of the girls that walked down the ramp with Bianca lost her mother yesterday. That is terrible, but it shows how classy Bianca Belair is showing her a little extra comfort. I really thought it was going to be Asuka’s moment, but she is still winless at WrestleMania. Hopefully that will change at WrestleMania 40, but for now, Bianca is a great champion and that title reign is only getting stronger.

-       Snoop Dogg Calls an Audible and Takes Down The Miz in His First WrestleMania Match

Oh. My. Goodness. I feel so horrible for Shane McMahon. I don’t think anyone expected his return and I was pumped up to see him. I thought he would never be seen in WWE again. He showed up to challenge The Miz and as the bell rings, he Irish whips Miz into the ropes, leaps over him and blows out his quad while he landed. I feel so bad for him because he was getting emotional about the crowd reaction and it was a good moment for him. Luckily Snoop Dogg stepped right in as they were attending to Shane O’ Mac. Snoop landed a couple punches on The Miz and hit him with his version of The People’s Elbow. It was audibled segment that went as smooth as it possibly could have. I don’t think Snoop Dogg expected to see any action in the ring, but he made the most of it. It just goes to show how fragile this business can be. Anything can happen and sometimes, you have no control over it.

-       Edge Survives Hell in a Cell Against The Demon

This match result was going to be a toss-up and I knew that going into the show. I also knew that these two guys would put on a heck of a performance and they did. For a moment, I thought they were going to have to stop the action and again, they had to do a little audible to give Bálor time to get medical attention. Edge brought out a ladder and Bálor took a vicious bump to the head. He was gushing blood. I don’t even think they were too worried if a little blood was shed, but it was a nasty gash that needed attention. Thankfully they patched it up quickly and he could continue. They put on a great match and I am so glad that they didn’t go to the top and fight or leave the cell. The cell was meant to contain the performers and it did just that in this match. I wouldn't even say that I’m surprised that Edge won, but it is a little surprising considering Finn Bálor brought out The Demon. The Demon rarely loses, but at this point, it doesn’t really matter if he wins or loses, it is cool to see him bring it back anytime. Also, I’m going to enjoy every match from here on out with Edge. He is doing the best work of his career and hopefully he can continue to do so for a while.

WWE

-       Roman Reigns Remains at the Head of the Table

I can't believe it. I really thought this was going to be the last match of Roman’s historic reign. I really bought in. I’ll admit, there have been times over the last 946 days where I thought it was possible that he could lose, but I really thought this was it. The match was awesome and honestly, the finish itself was good. It was the result that I am speechless about. I really thought that it was Cody’s time to shine, but it appears that they want Cody to undergo a little more adversity to win the belt. There is no chance that Cody doesn’t win the belt at some point during his contract tenure. Roman Reigns is approaching 1000 days as Universal Champion and I think they want him to surpass that mark. I honestly don’t know where they go from here, but there are still some possibilities. They’re limited, but they still do have some opponents left for Roman Reigns. I know one thing, I will be tuned into RAW and SmackDown this week to find out.
