Song of the Day: Big in Japan

Happy Friday everyone! Today, I wanted to feature a synth-pop song from the 1980s and so here you have it, “Big in Japan” by Alphaville. This band is well-known for their “Forever Young” song that was featured on the hit movie, “Napoleon Dynamite”. I found this one while searching and apparently there is a meaning for the phrase…”Big in Japan”. Neil Sedaka who was a competitor for Elvis Presley, said that he hit it big in Japan because Elvis never really left North America, so he could gather attention in places like Japan. For some reason, artists that weren’t necessarily popular in the Western world, took off in other places like Japan. To me, it also seems like a way to make yourself feel better about your career, like oh I’m popular in other places, but not here. It’s a pretty interesting phrase, but either way…I hope you enjoy some sweet synthesizing in this 1984 hit and have a great weekend!
