Song of the Day: Joltin' Joe DiMaggio

Some of us are here in Florida for Spring Training and I wanted to dive a little deep into the historical archives for today’s featured song. This song was performed in 1941 by the Les Brown Orchestra and Betty Bonney. DiMaggio is famous for being married to Marilyn Monroe, but is probably more famous for being a very, very good baseball player. This particular song was released just after his 56-game hitting streak was ended. It is still one of the most historic feats in all of sports. Along with the song, I’m going to attach some pictures of Joe DiMaggio at Spring Training

Here is Joe DiMaggio pictured with Lou Gehrig at DiMaggio’s first spring training appearance in 1936. The Yankees held their Spring Training in St. Petersburg, which is about 20 minutes from their site today. Lou Gehrig went on to win the MVP that season and the Yankees won the World Series. Shocker, I know. (AP)

Here is a pretty famous shot of DiMaggio. This was the first picture of him in a Yankees uniform. The picture was also taken in his rookie season at Spring Training. It was his first look at the big leagues. He hit for a .323 average in his rookie campaign and smacked 29 homers. (Getty)

Here is DiMaggio taking BP in St. Petersburg. This was DiMaggio next to last season in 1950. He hit for a .301 AVG, 32 HRs, and led the AL in Slugging. The Yankees won the World Series this season as well.(AP)
