5 Things You Didn’t Know About the Seattle Mariners

mlb.com

In this series I am going through all 30 MLB teams and presenting five facts you most likely didn’t know about each one.  As a big baseball fan, I thought I knew a lot about the history of the game, but there’s so much I’m learning as I’m going through this, which makes it really fun to put together.  Let’s get started.  Next up, the Seattle Mariners:

1. They are no stranger to futility

Beginning as a franchise in 1977, the Mariners had losing seasons in each of their first 15 seasons, until finally putting together a winning season in 1991, which is a record.  They also haven’t reached the playoffs since 2001, the longest drought in any of the four American major league sports.

2. Hold the record for the most wins in a single regular season

They hold the American League record by themselves with a 116-win regular season in 2001, and they share that record with the 1906 Cubs, who also won 116 games, when it comes to the entire MLB

3. A Seattle Mariner holds the record for the most hits in a single season

And I’m sure you can guess who it is.  That’s right, pure hitter Ichiro Suzuki compiled 262 hits in a single regular season in 2004, an MLB record.  If that isn’t enough to prove he’s one of the best hitters of all time, he also holds the record for the most consecutive 200-hit seasons, with ten.  That’s simply amazing.

4. They are the only MLB team to have NEVER reached the World Series

Six total teams have never won the World Series: the Seattle Mariners, Colorado Rockies, Tampa Bay Rays, San Diego Padres, Milwaukee Brewers, and Texas Rangers.  Out of those six, the Seattle Mariners are the only team to have never played in a World Series game.

5. Have a combined no-hitter record

When the Seattle Mariners used a total of six pitchers to throw a combined no-hitter against the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2012, they tied the record for the most pitchers to throw a combined no-hitter with the 2003 Houston Astros.  The six pitchers were Kevin Millwood, Charlie Furbush, Stephen Pryor, Lucas Luetge, Brandon League, and Tom Wilhelmsen.
