Chicago Blackhawks Took on the Sesame Street On This Day in 1975

I saw a video of this a couple months ago and wanted to write something about it. So, you are reading this correctly. Big Bird, Cookie Monster, Bert, Ernie and Grover took on the Chicago Blackhawks in an exhibition match before their matchup with the New York Islanders on December 21st, 1975. Some of you may have already seen this clip before, but I think it is amazing. Not only the fact that they’re skating in those giant suits, but actually playing hockey as well.

Cookie Monster was protecting the goal and you may want to make sure you have plenty of pucks on hand because of how closely they resemble cookies, other than that, I think he would be a great goalie. Grover is the center and out of the group, he has to be. Bert and Ernie are the wingers and that makes perfect sense. I don’t know about you, but I definitely don’t want to be meeting Big Bird against the boards. Big Bird would do some damage on the defense.

Tony Esposito, Alain Daigle, Ivan Boldirev, Darcy Rota, and Dale Tallon are the Blackhawks players seen in the clip. Apparently, the Sesame Street crew was in town to do a show that week and it all just worked out. The Blackhawks won their regular season matchup against the Islanders on that night 47 years ago, 5-2. Rota scored 2 goals and Boldirev and Daigle assisted on a goal each. John Marks (2) and Pit Martin scored the other 3 goals. The Blackhawks lost in the quarterfinals of the Stanley Cup Playoffs to the Montreal Canadiens that season. The Canadiens went on to win the Cup.
