SummerSlam (2021) Predictions

With the news of CM Punk’s return to wrestling by way of AEW, it will be interesting to see what the WWE has up their sleeve to maintain intrigue. The biggest party of the summer is tonight and if nobody has said it yet, let me be the first to say, I love Saturday PPVs. I wish they were all on Saturday, but it doesn’t appear that it will be the case coming up. It looks like we’re getting a 10-match official card for SummerSlam and it isn’t a bad card at all, but I don’t really love all of the matchups. We’ll get into that with each match, but I think most fans are interested in the potential surprises rather than the outcomes. We’ll see how the action all unfolds, but here are my predictions for tonight’s SummerSlam

-       Women’s Singles Match

Alexa Bliss vs. Eva Marie

WWE

WWE

This feud has been somewhat of a waste and to be honest, isn’t because Eva Marie is in it. I honestly think she catches a lot of flak for no reason. The new Alexa Bliss character had intrigue in the start, but that luster is quickly fading. I really don’t think fans are that interested in it anymore. Bliss is a big favorite and with her matches at this point, it is difficult to predict what will happen. I think she’ll win though.

-       Men’s Singles Match: United States Championship

Sheamus (C) vs. Damian Priest

WWE

WWE

Sheamus really hasn’t been an active champion. He has held the belt for a while but was out of action for quite a while. He’s back for good now, but I think that reign ends tonight. Damian Priest is a great performer and it is time for him to get something for that. I think Priest would make a great US Champion and I think he could soon be competing for major titles. We’ll see what happens, but Priest is a -300 favorite.

-       Men’s Singles Match

Drew McIntyre vs. Jinder Mahal

WWE

WWE

They couldn’t have planned this feud any worse than they have to this point. It was rumored that Mahal was supposed to challenge McIntyre for the WWE Championship some months ago, but Mahal got injured. All of that steam is gone right now, and they decide to green light the feud? Doesn’t make sense to me, but what do I know? McIntyre is favored by a decent margin, but who knows? Mahal could get a win here. It doesn’t really appear that anything is at stake.

-       Men’s Tag Team Match: RAW Tag Team Championship

AJ Styles and Omos (C) vs. Randy Orton and Riddle

WWE

WWE

It is going to take a special team to take down AJ Styles and Omos and I think RK-Bro is that team. Orton and Riddle have great chemistry and the pairing is quite unexpected but one that I have enjoyed. Orton has had more serious personas over the span of his career, but he is coming out of his shell a little more with Riddle and you can tell that he is acting more like himself than he ever has. I think this will be a great match.

-       Men’s Tag Team Match: SmackDown Tag Team Championship

The Usos (C) vs. The Mysterios

WWE

WWE

It looks like we’re getting a rematch for the tag belts here and their last matchup was good, so let’s see if they follow up with another good match. I can’t see The Usos dropping the titles here. They have been very strong lately and the Mysterios have been a good team for them to challenge. We’ll see what happens, but it would be surprised to see the Mysterios win the belts again.

-       Women’s Triple Threat: RAW Women’s Championship

Nikki A.S.H. (C) vs. Charlotte Flair vs. Rhea Ripley

WWE

WWE

I am sick and tired of seeing the same matches in different variations on RAW. This is a prime example. I feel like we have seen this exact match with different variations every week for the last 5 months. RAW sucks and stuff like this is not helping their case. They have so many talented women on their rosters and they really don’t know how to utilize them for some reason. It makes no sense. I have no reason why I think Charlotte will win, but I don’t think Nikki will enjoy a lengthy title reign. Nikki is actually the favorite surprisingly enough, but who knows? She could retain.

-       Women’s Singles Match: SmackDown Women’s Championship

Bianca Belair (C) vs. Sasha Banks

WWE

WWE

I had very little interest in this match at WrestleMania and I have even less interest in it now. I will never buy into this match as long as these two continue to have the same persona. It is exactly the same persona, but different slogans. With these two, you’re basically getting John Cena in 2012 vs. John Cena in 2013. Same person, different day. I think they’ll put on a good match, but if I could skip this match, I honestly would. Belair is a slight favorite.

-       Men’s Singles Match

Edge vs. Seth Rollins

WWE

WWE

This is probably the biggest toss-up of the night, but I think Edge has the edge. This feud has been wonderful and other than Cena/Reigns, this has the most intrigue. Some have been saying that there could be a potential Becky Lynch run-in with this match, but I can’t really see that happening. I don’t think she should turn heel for the sake of a potential mixed tag match payoff, but who knows? Edge is favored at -260, which I’m kinda surprised it is that high. This will likely be the longest match on the card.

-       Men’s Singles Match: WWE Championship

Bobby Lashley (C) vs. Goldberg

WWE

WWE

Bobby Lashley, for the love of God, do not let Goldberg win this match. We don’t need that in our lives. With that being said, there is obviously potential for Goldberg to win. The only way I want to see Goldberg win is if Big E immediately cashes in on him. That is literally the only reason I would want to see another Goldberg match. Lashley is a big favorite, but I’ll believe it when it’s over.

-       Men’s Singles Match: Universal Championship

Roman Reigns (C) vs. John Cena

WWE

WWE

What a main event matchup! Cena vs. Reigns. John Cena was my favorite wrestler growing up and Roman Reigns has become one of my favorites as of late. I really don’t care who wins, but I don’t think Cena is going to be around for the long haul, so I think Roman will win. I could see Cena getting a quick title reign to break the record though because he is still scheduled for events after SummerSlam, but I don’t think that will be the case. They’re setting things up for a matchup between Reigns and The Rock and honestly, I don’t think that needs to happen. Would I like to see it happen? Yeah, but it isn’t necessary. There a lot of other things they could do at the moment. If Roman wins here, I think he will officially enter legendary status.
