US Open DFS Preview

I am so excited to write about this major. One of the reasons is that they are playing at one of my favorite courses in Torrey Pines…but I am pumped about my momentum heading into this week. Garrick Higgo made me look like a genius last week…the South African never shot above 69 all weekend and cruised to victory in his SECOND start. I cannot emphasize that enough, Higgo is the real deal and his friend Wilco Nienaber averaged a driving distance of 360 yards…pretty remarkable and by the way…they are both in the field for the US Open. I have pivoted my strategy over to tournament style, because the safe, single entry stuff has not been working in my favor and when you pick 4 out of 6 golfers and still win (like I did at Palmetto) you feel good about your strategy. In terms of the field, the best of the best will be here. Also, DraftKings has the $1M maker for this week, so reserve those entries before it fills up (if it hasn’t already).

Torrey Pines is the host of the Farmers Insurance Open every year and they played here in January with Patrick Reed putting on a clinic. I will be looking at this tourney for my strategy, but one thing to remember…the grass is different…they played on ryegrass then and they will be playing on Kikuyu grass for this one. The Kikuyu grass doesn’t carry a lot of speed, so look for big drivers. It is an East African grass, so keep that in mind as well (hint Higgo and Nienaber). I also remember reading a Golf Digest article about this type of grass being at The Genesis Invitational at Riviera…so I will be looking at results from there as well. Driving distance and Greens-in-Regulation are key talking points. The distance will be 7,600+ yards and roughly 60 of the 156 golfers will make the cut after Friday.

Tier 1: Jon Rahm ($11,200)

This is a rare occurrence for me as I will be going with the most expensive golfer this week, Jon Rahm. With finishes of 2nd and 7th in the last 2 Farmers…and 5th and 17th at Genesis…how can you ignore him? Rahm is a big hitter and 5th in Greens-in-Regulation. If he didn’t have to withdraw from The Memorial…its highly likely he wins. I look for Rahm to put on a show and he is the course favorite at 10/1 according to CBS.

Tier 2: Adam Scott ($7,400)

My tiers will be a little off since I am going with a tourney strategy, but nonetheless Adam Scott is a great option. The Australian won The Genesis in 2020 and finished 10th at Farmers this season. The veteran ranks 20th overall in Driving distance. Scott comes to play at the big ones and I do believe he will be a name that hovers around the top of the leaderboard all weekend. The price point is not bad for Scott’s 66/1 odds

Tier 3: Max Homa ($7,300)

This guy was everywhere when I did my research…he won The Genesis this season and finished 5th in 2020…and hasn’t finished outside the top-20 in the last 2 Farmers. Homa is in pretty good form after a 6th place finish at The Memorial. The statistics for Max are not as eye-popping as maybe Rahm or Scott, but the results show that he should be reckoned with on Sunday, maybe the California roots help him win at 90/1.
