Whipping Post by The Allman Brothers Band. Released in November of 1969 on the band’s debut album, The Allman Brothers Band. The song has big time blues vibes and I was actually kind of surprised when I looked up and saw this was the original version of this song. I definitely could have seen this being a cover from a 1920-30s blues song. What’s even more impressive is the fact that this song which has so much soul and about the blues was written and recorded by Gregg Allman when he was just 21 years old. Actually I’m not sure if a 21 yr old writing this song is more impressive or the singing, because you also could’ve told me that was a a guy in his 60s singing and I would’ve believed it. Very impressive at a young age. Also if this version wasn’t long enough for you, the studio version here clocks in at 5:16, the live version of this song which was released on the band’s live album two years later, At Fillmore East, clocked in at a time of 22:40.
