What is Going to Happen at Winter is Coming Tonight?

That is a question a lot of us AEW are wondering. Tonight’s special AEW Dynamite, Winter is Coming is expected to be a big show with a lot of big things. Last year, Winter is Coming might have been the most surprising show of the year, scratch that, the company’s history. Last year, Sting appeared out of nowhere. Nobody knew he was signing with AEW, nobody knew that he was going to compete again at all. He did and he has. He has competed in 5 matches so far in 2021 and I must say, that is impressive for a guy his age. Not only that, he seemingly hasn’t missed a step.

Even though Sting’s surprise appearance last year was definitely the biggest surprise, was it the biggest moment of that night? It could be argued that it wasn't. Jon Moxley lost his belt to Kenny Omega in a nearly 30-minute bout, with the help of Don Callis. Omega held the belt for nearly a year and became the longest-reigning champion in AEW history. A record that likely won’t be broken for a while, especially with all of the talent that AEW currently has.

AEW

Last year’s show was a big deal, but will the excitement that proceeded last year’s show be matched this year? It certainly has the potential. Over the course of a year, a lot has happened in AEW. CM Punk is back in wrestling. Bryan Danielson went from main eventing WrestleMania 37 in April, to jumping into the All Elite camp. For that matter, a lot of ex-WWE jumped ship this year. Adam Cole, Ruby Soho, Bobby Fish, Tony Nese, Christian Cage, Andrade, and Malakai Black all were with WWE during last year’s event. More are expected to sign in the coming weeks or months.

The card is pretty solid, as usual, for tonight’s show. We have and no-DQ match with Hikaru Shida vs. Serena Deeb. The match for the AEW Diamond Ring between MJF and Dante Martin. Wardlow vs. Matt Sydal and the main event for the AEW World Championship, Hangman Adam Page vs. Bryan Danielson. It should be a great show.

WWE

I’m going to briefly break down each match later on, but for now, I’m moving on to surprises that may occur in the show. What will be this year’s “Sting moment”? I got news for you, there probably won’t be one. Not there won’t be any surprises though. You’re just not going to match the level of surprise that the Sting appearance brought last year. A lot of rumors are swirling around a possible Undisputed Era reunion with Kyle O’Reilly joining AEW. I could definitely see that happening tonight. Another possibility is that Johnny Wrestling himself could be moving to All Elite Wrestling. Yet again, Johnny Gargano would be another great fit for the brand. These two guys are probably leaving the WWE and while AEW seems like the most obvious choice, there is a world of opportunities for them elsewhere.

WWE

Another name that is on a lot of radars is the recently released Jeff Hardy. Hardy was released by WWE just this week, but can he even sign with another company now? Probably not, so don’t get your hopes up for a Hardy Boyz reunion tonight. Quite possibly the person with the biggest potential pop would be Windham Rotunda. If you’re asking who is Windham Rotunda? The answer is the man formally know as “The Fiend” aka Bray Wyatt. He has been silent since July, when he was released from WWE and this could be the perfect time for him to return to wrestling. It would be huge for AEW to get a signing like him, even if it is a little crowded at the moment.

Other than those, I can’t really see any other new potential signing making a big splash, so here are my predictions for tonight.

- Men’s Singles Match: AEW Diamond Ring

MJF vs. Dante Martin

AEW

I could honestly see this going either way, but I think it makes more sense for MJF to keep the ring. It has been his thing since the start of AEW and while Dante Martin is a great competitor, I don’t think he is nearly on the level of MJF, not yet anyway. MJF makes it a three-peat.

- Women’s No-DQ Match

Serena Deeb vs. Hikaru Shida

AEW

This will be the third matchup between these two ladies and it will probably be the last matchup. No-DQ for all the marbles. Shida has the edge here I think, but who knows. They’re tied and one victory apiece and Deeb could sneak a win, but I think Holy Shida will be victorious tonight.

- Men’s Singles Match

Wardlow vs. Matt Sydal

AEW

I’m going with the obvious size advantage here. I think Sydal will hang around for a little bit, but Wardlow will probably demolish him tonight. Just looking at records in 2021. 25-3 vs. 20-22. I don’t think I have to tell you which record is who’s. Wardlow wins easily tonight.

- Men’s Singles Match: AEW World Championship

Hangman Adam Page (C) vs. Bryan Danielson

AEW

I really could see this going either way, but I think we’ll see a new champion tonight. Bryan Danielson has been on fire since his entry in AEW and I think it would be a mistake for him to lose. This will be Page’s first match since winning the belt and I think a lot of fans would be upset, but Danielson is a proven heel that could get a tremendous amount of heat. I think we get a new champ tonight and if we don’t, that’s fine too. I think it will be a great match.
