2020 WWE Power Rankings: Year-End Edition

Happy New Year Everyone! The AEW Year-End Power Rankings went out a couple days ago and today we unveil the WWE Power Rankings for 2020. This year has been crazy to say the least and perhaps wrestling was one of the few things that remained a constant in the world. I am so glad that these performers never stopped working throughout the pandemic because for a good portion of the year, there was nothing live on TV other than the news. Restrictions are starting to loosen a little bit in certain areas of the country and that possibly means that we could see full capacity arenas in 2021. I sure hope so anyway. I noticed a lot of changes from the first half of the year to the second and you will see that in this article. This year was full of ups and downs, just like any other year, but how did the 2020 year play out in my Power Rankings? Well, let’s find out.

-       2nd Half Performer of the Year: Roman Reigns (16 Second Half Appearances; 6 Number Ones)

WWE

WWE

This is likely the least shocking thing about this article. Roman Reigns has been nothing short of excellent since his return in August. What is crazy about it though is that he is number one for the second half, but missed the first 8 weeks of the second half. So, if my math is correct, out of the 18 possible weeks, he appeared in my rankings for 16 of them. The only thing I can say about that is absolute domination.

-       Mr. Consistency: Keith Lee (7 First Half Appearances; 9 Second Half Appearances)

WWE

WWE

I was down to a couple guys for this award, but I don’t think any of them deserved it more than Keith Lee. If he is pushed in the right direction, he could be the face of the WWE in a matter of a couple years. His highlight of 2020 was becoming the first ever double champion in NXT history, by winning both the NXT and retaining the North American Championship in July. The thing about it too is, as likeable as he is as a face, I think he could be a tremendous heel. Keith Lee is your Mr. Consistency and I am expecting big things from him in 2021.

-       Miss Consistency: Asuka (10 First Half Appearances; 12 Second Half Appearances)

WWE

WWE

Asuka was not only the most consistent female performer on the roster, but she is a darkhorse pick for MVP since the pandemic. She has been on TV virtually every week and is one of the best wrestlers in the company. I really don’t see how you could dislike Asuka. She is doing everything right and I hope she has as much success in the upcoming year.

-       Most Improved Superstar: Roman Reigns (5 First Half Appearances; 16 Second Half Appearances)

WWE

WWE

The only reason why he won this award was because of the fact that he missed 5 months of action. When the pandemic hit, he took some time off and returned in August. Since then, he has been the biggest star in what has been a true battle between the top dog on RAW and SmackDown.

-       Where Did You Go? Award: Lacey Evans (7 First Half Appearances; 0 Second Half Appearances)

WWE

WWE

As much as I hate to give her this award, she hasn’t been seen a lot since the first half. She has been in a decent number of matches, but hasn’t won many in the second half. Lacey Evans is one of my favorite female competitors and I am rooting for her probably more than anyone on the roster, I feel like 2021 will be her year to shine and we may see her win a title next year. Who knows?

Just Missed the Cut:

Here are some superstars that were great in 2020, but just missed out on the Top 10 Power Rankings.

12 Appearances: Jey Uso, Braun Strowman and AJ Styles

11 Appearances: Io Shirai

10 Appearances: The Street Profits, Riddle and Adam Cole

-       10: Bray Wyatt (14 Appearances; 1 Number One)

WWE

WWE

In January, I thought that Bray Wyatt was going to be a lock for Top 5 this year, but that hasn’t been the case. He has had a great year, but I don’t think it lived up to its full potential. His latest feud with Randy Orton has been great, but I don’t think his feud with Braun Strowman lived up to all that it could’ve been. I will probably say this forever, but putting Goldberg over in Saudi Arabia was a huge mistake moving forward for his character. It didn’t tarnish its aura, but it certainly didn’t help. The Fiend has been the best character in WWE in probably 20 years and I guess we’ll see where it goes from here, because in his last appearance, he was burned alive.

-       9: Bobby Lashley (15 Appearances)

WWE

WWE

It is a little surprising to see Lashley crack the Top 10, but he has been absolutely dominant this year, especially in the second half of the year. Since the start of the second half, Lashley’s record, including tag matches, is 24-4. That is insane. I don’t think he and The Hurt Business is slowing down anytime soon either. He is the current US Champion and has held it for 4 months. I can see him hanging onto it until WrestleMania to be honest and I wouldn’t rule the possibility of him becoming a major champion in 2021. Lashley is on the rise.

-       8: Keith Lee (16 Appearances; 1 Number One)

WWE

WWE

Speaking of superstars on the rise. Keith Lee is Limitless and will stop at nothing to become the next WWE Champion. Lee is currently the number one contender for the title, but I don’t think it will be his last match for the belt. Lee is proven as a fan favorite and his in-ring skills are unlike anything that we have seen in quite some time. Lee won my Mr. Consistency award this year and hopefully he carries that consistency into 2021. Bask in His Glory!

-       7: Sasha Banks (17 Appearances; 1 Number One)

WWE

WWE

I thought for sure that Sasha Banks would be in the Top 5, but she just missed out on it. Banks is probably the performer with the most momentum in the women’s division and for good reason. She is a great performer. She makes the heat believable and she puts it on full display in the ring. Her feud with Bayley was perhaps the best feud of 2020 and their matches were tremendous. Not only that, but she and Asuka had a great feud in the early part of the second half. I expect Sasha to remain at the top of the women’s division in 2021, but there are a lot of great female performers on the rise.

-       6: Randy Orton (18 Appearances; 7 Number Ones)

WWE

WWE

With the kind of second half that Orton has had, it is a little surprising to see him out of the Top 5, but he was one appearance short. Orton has rejuvenated his career and he is doing the best work of his career. His feud with Drew McIntyre was nothing short of brilliant and he even walked away with a short title reign. His most notable feud of the year was probably Edge though. His current feud is with Bray Wyatt and some believe that he may end up having a rematch with Edge at WrestleMania, which would be pretty interesting. I guess we’ll have to wait and see with that one, but I’m excited to see what else the Legend Killer has up his sleeve.

-       5: Seth Rollins (19 Appearances; 3 Number Ones)

WWE

WWE

Moving into the Top 5 and I have to say, it seems like a surprise that Rollins is in the Top 5. It feels like he has missed quite a bit of time, but he has only been gone a month. Rollins will always be one of those guys that keeps the cog rolling so to speak. You can count on him to deliver and he did just that in 2020. While some people didn’t enjoy the feud with he and the Mysterio family, I thought it was really solid. It was a little weird at times, but they kept us entertained and that was the main thing. He is supposed to be returning to SmackDown this week and it will be interesting to see where his character goes from here.

-       4: Bayley (20 Appearances)

WWE

WWE

Bayley was the Women’s MVP of the first half and Miss Consistency in 2019 and she drops in at number 4 for 2020. She dropped the SmackDown Women’s Championship in October and has lost quite a bit of momentum since then, but is still towards the top of the women’s division. She carried the title for over a year and was a dominant force for the bigger portion of the year. I don’t know what lies in store for the Role Model in the new year, but expect her to be in good feuds moving forward if she isn’t competing for a title.

-       3: Roman Reigns (21 Appearances; 6 Number Ones)

WWE

WWE

Roman’s 2020 tale has been one that is bottom heavy if you break it down in 6-month increments. He was the MVP in the Second Half and the Most Improved Superstar for the year. Don’t expect him to slow down any time soon either. He became the Tribal Chief and has been a big reason why SmackDown is the number one wrestling show on TV. The fans wanted to see him turn heel so badly this year and they got their wish and along with it, they got the biggest star in the company by his own merit. Good for Roman and I am anxious to see where he is headed in 2021.

-       2: Asuka (22 Appearances; 2 Number Ones)

WWE

WWE

I knew Asuka as going to be towards the top, but I am a little surprised to see her above Roman Reigns. Asuka has truly been the MVP of the Women’s division since the pandemic. She was the Money in the Bank winner back in May and it just so happened that she won the RAW Women’s title as a result of that victory, because Becky Lynch had to relinquish the belt. Since then, there was only a month-long period when she didn’t hold the belt, but has been dominant ever since. She also became a 2-time Women’s Tag Team Champion a couple weeks ago with Charlotte Flair. It appears that there may be another big Asuka/Charlotte match in the near future, but until then, I’m excited to see them teaming up.

-       1: Drew McIntyre (36 Appearances; 8 Number Ones)

WWE

WWE

The MVP for 2020 was never in doubt. Drew McIntyre was the man this year and I could see that carrying over all the way throughout 2021. I wrote in early 2019 that it was going to be the year of Drew McIntyre, well, I was only a year off, but did he ever break out this year. He defeated Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania and has held the title ever since, except for those 22 days that Randy Orton was champion.  McIntyre will likely hold the belt until WrestleMania and I feel like if everything goes right, he will be in the Top 5 of my Power Rankings this time next year.
