AEW Power Rankings: Week of July 9th 2020

Last week, I unveiled the Midseason Power Rankings for both WWE and AEW and I think they were both interesting in their own right. With those being unveiled last week, I didn’t get a chance to release last week’s rankings for both. At the end of the article I will release last week’s ranking along with this week’s. Fyter Fest was head-to-head with The Great American Bash and while both were good shows, NXT outperformed in total viewership, despite AEW dominating the 18-49 demo. I can be a little biased towards AEW, but I thought both shows were great over the last 2 weeks. The Puppy Battle Royale may have put AEW over the top. In all seriousness, here are the Power Rankings for this week and stay tuned, because I may have some video content for you guys coming up in the next few weeks.

5: Kenny Omega and Hangman Page

Omega and Page were last week’s number one and Omega was the MVP of the First Half of 2020, but this week wasn’t an awesome week for them. They had to successful title defenses in both weeks of Fyter Fest, but this match with Private Party didn’t really hit the mark for me. I don’t know why, but it was one of the least entertaining matches on the card. Nevertheless, they got another win and another appearances on the Power Rankings.

4: Lance Archer

Archer had a nice win over Joey Janela this week. I personally wanted to see Archer demolish Joey Janela, because I think he as at that point where he should be obliterating opponents. He did get the win, but I feel like he could’ve benefitted more with a short, yet violent match with him. I think Archer is probably not too far away from a title shot, but I guess we’ll see.

3: The Dark Order and Colt Cabana

This match wasn’t awesome, but it did what it needed to. This team defeated SCU and it wasn’t a surprise, but it is interesting to see Colt Cabana’s involvement with The Dark Order. I don’t know if Cabana is going to join the group, but I think things could get crazy in a couple weeks.

2: Lucha Bros and The Butcher and The Blade

I didn’t really expect to see The Lucha Bros and The Butcher and The Blade pick up the win here, but it happened and they receive the number two ranking for the week. They beat FTR and The Young Bucks I don’t know what this means for the winning groups moving forward, but I think it was mainly meant to cause a rift between the Bucks and FTR. It was a great match nevertheless and one of the most entertaining matches on the card.

1: Chris Jericho

AEW

AEW

I really wanted to rank Orange Cassidy, but I felt like I couldn't. Jericho won the main event match and should be number one this week. It was an entertaining match and Jericho even said that it was possibly the most fun he has ever had in a match. I think a lot of people would like to see Orange Cassidy in the main event spotlight and I think he proved that he can hold his own as a main event performer. We’ll see wha this leads to for Cassidy, but Jericho will continue to be AEW’s top talent.
