Song of the Day: The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down

From one of the greatest live albums ever, The Last Waltz

The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down by The Band. The song was written by Robbie Robertson and recorded by The Band and released in 1969. Kind funny that it’s a Canadian band and Canadian songwriter performing a song about the American Civil War. While The Band were the first to perform the song it has been covered numerous times through the years by Johhny Cash, John Denver, Alman Brothers, Jerry Garcia, Black Crowes and more. But the most successful version of the song was when Joan Baez recorded and released in it 1971 and the song peaked at #3 on the Top 100 charts in the US. Despite all the other renditions, The Band’s remains the best in my opinion and it even earned them a spot at #245 on Rolling Stone magazine’s Top 500 song of all time.
