Carolina men’s basketball landed their 6th recruit yesterday in Kerwin Walton for the 2020 class, a class that ranks among the highest ever for UNC since rivals.com began recruiting rankings.  Walton, from Minnetonka, Minnesota, is a four-star shooting guard that ranks as the 87th best overall player nationally and the 21st best for his position.  It was once again another huge addition to a Tar Heel basketball team that is looking primed to redeem this forgettable season with a strong one next year.  So, what does adding Walton specifically mean for the Heels?

First and foremost, Kerwin Walton is a deadly shooter.  Everyone agrees he’s among the very best shooters in the 2020 class.  It’s not hard to remember just how desperately Carolina needed shooters this past season, so having another outside threat will be a welcomed sight in Chapel Hill.  At 6’5”, he’s got nice size for the 2-guard position and has a great feel for the game, according to scouts.  He has a knack for getting himself open to knock down shots.  He is also well adept at creating his own shot off the dribble.

“I think one of the biggest standouts is my shooting, my defense, and just being able to make plays and being able to make the right decision and find people in the right spots and be able to knock shots down,” Walton quoted.  “I know they were struggling last year with it so I think I can help them out with that.”  Yes, the Tar Heels definitely struggled with all of that last year, so if he brings those skills to Chapel Hill, he will be a big-time addition.  I’m also glad he mentioned defense as one of his biggest skills because there’s no better way to get in the game under Roy Williams than playing good defense.

The other big thing that adding Kerwin Walton does for the Tar Heels is allow them to go deeper on the bench.  We all know Roy Williams loves to play a deep bench, often 10 deep, and he should once again be able to do that this year barring injuries.  And “going deep” won’t mean sacrificing talent either.  With the talent coming back, as well as who’s coming in, Roy should be able to run other teams off the floor by utilizing a deep, skillful bench to keep everyone energized.  I know that I, along with every Carolina basketball fan, am really eager for next season to begin.

While we all spend the summer months analyzing what the starting lineup should be, as well as the depth chart scenario, here’s what I have as of this moment:
