Welcome to the Queen City Derrick Brown! With the 7th overall pick in last night’s NFL Draft, the Carolina Panthers selected DT Derrick Brown out of the University of Auburn. Here’s some things you may not know about our newest Panther:

He was named the 2019 SEC Defensive Player of the Year

He has a 16 month old son named Kai.

He’s got great character and devotes himself to helping others. He’s went on mission trips as part of Fellowship of Christian Athletes to the Dominican Republic to help build homes and worked at toy drives, food banks, and helped re-build a school near Auburn that was damaged from a tornado.

He was very involved in college as a leader of his fellow students. At Auburn, he led the committee of student athletes at Auburn, listening and relaying their input to university administrators and athletic officials. He was also a member of the Southeastern Conference’s Student Athlete Leadership Council.

His commitment to helping others stem from his parents who led Derrick and his siblings to picking up trash outside of the local elementary school on Saturdays, take out the garbage at church on Sundays after service, and volunteer around the county and donate canned goods to the Salvation Army.

He gave up the chance to be a first round pick last year to return to school and complete his degree in marketing. “I want to change that stereotype that football players are dumb,” quoted Derrick.

He is already making plans for his post-NFL career. He wants to pursue a career in marketing or law enforcement, perhaps even the FBI. But one of his coaches at Auburn thinks he should run for public office.

Retired defensive end Stephen White thinks Derrick Brown is the most exciting interior pass rusher since Aaron Donald.
