AEW Power Rankings: Week of April 10th 2020

AEW was up against some stiff competition this week and NXT finally picked up a rating win this week. NXT pulled out the stops and featured some matches that were supposed to be at the TakeOver event that got cancelled. AEW still had a decent show despite the rating loss this week. Chris Jericho was the guest commentator for the show and did a wonderful job. Also, I forgot to put out the AEW Power Rankings for last week, so I will put those at the end of the Rankings for this week. Here are this week’s rankings.

-       5: Brodie Lee

The Exalted One had a rather uneventful, yet destructive week. He faced Lee Johnson this week and absolutely destroyed the competition. AEW had a couple squash matches this week, but both kind of fell flat in my opinion. I realize that they’re placed on the card to give new talent relevancy and credibility, but I thought they were the worst parts of the show this week.

-       4: Lance Archer

Going from one squash match to the other, Lance Archer picked up a win against an opponent without a name. Even though it feels weird putting Archer over Lee, especially based on the fact that his win came against a guy that they didn’t even bother to reveal his name, but that was the case. Archer’s case for squashes is a better case because of the fact that nobody really knows him, unless you’re a fan of NJPW. I personally think Archer is the favorite for the new TNT Championship.

-       3: Best Friends

Best Friends have been seeing TV time quite a lot since the start of the show. Their alliance with Orange Cassidy is the biggest reason for this without a doubt, but this showcases them as a legitimately great team. They picked up a win this week against Kenny Omega and Michael Nakazawa. It feels weird saying Kenny Omega and losing in the same sentence, but it happened this week. Big week for Best Friends and Freshly Squeezed.

-       2: Cody

Cody and Shawn Spears had the main event match this week and Cody came away with the win. It was a solid match, but the ending felt a little weird. Cody went through a table and somehow Spears wasn’t DQ’d. AEW has been hit and miss with their referee calls since the start of the show, but it feels like it has been a while since a continuity error like this one. It was a good match though, don’t get me wrong. Cody advances to the next round of the tournament.

-       1: Hikaru Shida

AEW

AEW

This was the most enjoyable match of the night and Shida picked up a big win against Dr. Britt Baker. Shida picking up the win was a big deal, but for me personally, Baker’s face busted open and having her smile on camera was what sold the rest of the segment. They now have t-shirts on AEW of her bloodied face smiling and it is awesome. Although Shida will get the bigger payoff in the short term, I applaud Baker for the last couple of months. She has been awesome and she is owning this new character. At first, I hated what they were doing with her, but I have grown to love it. Shida picks up the big win and is one step closer to a title shot in the near future.
