AEW Power Rankings: Week of October 7th 2020

Yesterday was a Dynamite episode in honor of Chris Jericho’s illustrious 30-year career and the celebration was another good showing from the performers at AEW. There were a lot of solid matches last night and a lot of things that are setting up for the weeks to come. Here are my rankings for the week.

5: Big Swole

Big Swole and Serena Deeb had a match last night and it happened to be the only women’s match on the card. The match was fine, but it just seemed to lack something. I can’t really pin it down, but something was missing. Also, is Big Swole a heel or a face? Using a headbutt to secure the victory? Not really a move that babyfaces do.

4: Brian Cage

Cage defended the FTW title in the opening match last night against Will Hobbs. Both competitors looked great, but I am not a fan of Cage carrying around a meaningless title and defending as if it means something. A serious competitor like Cage shouldn’t be doing something like this. The match was solid though and Will Hobbs looked great in this match.

3: FTR

FTR defended their tag belts again, but this time it was against Jack Evans and Angelico. I personally thought the match was going to be over pretty quick, but The Hybrid 2’s put up a big fight. FTR is proving that they belong at the top and personally, I don’t really understand why they’re hated on so much. I’m not even talking about their manufactured heat, they just don’t think they’re impressive. I don’t understand it, but I realize fans will have their own separate opinions.

2: Cody

It doesn’t seem quite right for a guy that regained a title on TV to be number 2 in a week, but that is the case this week. Cody faced Brodie Lee for the TNT Championship and regained what was his. One more week would’ve been a 2 month reign for Brodie Lee, but it looks like Cody will be the champion moving forward. Cody will face Orange Cassidy next week and that should be another great matchup.

1: Chris Jericho

This seemed like the right thing to do for the rankings this week. Chris Jericho has performed for 30 years, risking his future health to entertain people like us, I think he deserves the number one spot just for that fact alone. He and Jake Hager won the main event match against Luther and Serpentico. While this match was meant to be a chance for Chris Jericho to be honored, he wanted Luther and Serpentico to get a little shine, so that’s just what happened. Times like this make us realize that Jericho isn’t going to be wrestling for much longer and we should cherish it every time he is in the ring. He is truly a once-in-a-lifetime performer.
