American Pie by Don Mclean. The number one hit song released in November of 1971. This song has more unexplained symbolism than maybe any other song in history. And most of that is due to Mclean’s reluctance through the years to delve into the deeper meaning of his lyrics. It’s been widely recognized, and I’ve never heard disputed otherwise, that the lyrics “the day the music died” was referring to the plane crash that killed Buddy Holly, The Big Bopper, and Richie Valens. The king is thought to be Elvis and the jester is thought to be Bob Dylan. There is even thought to be a reference to the Rolling Stones’ Altamont Free Concert which turned into a violent scene. But in the end, they’re just all assumptions and nobody really knows but Mclean.
