A Look Back at Our NFL Pre-Season Predictions

Associated Press

Associated Press

With just three games left in the playoffs, the NFL season is just about over. I thought it would be fun to take a look back at our staff’s NFL predictions for the 2019 season we made on Labor Day. Let’s take a look at whose predictions were spot on and whose predictions are now laughable:

Yacs

AFC East

New England Patriots (12-4)

New York Jets (8-8)

Buffalo Bills (5-11)

Miami Dolphins (3-13)

AFC North

Pittsburgh Steelers (12-4)

Baltimore Ravens (10-6)

Cleveland Browns (8-8)

Cincinnati Bengals (4-12)

AFC South

Tennessee Titans (10-6)

Jacksonville Jaguars (9-7)

Houston Texans (8-8)

Indianapolis Colts (4-12)

AFC West

Kansas City Chiefs (11-5)

Los Angeles Chargers (11-5)

Denver Broncos (5-11)

Oakland Raiders (4-12)

NFC East

Philadelphia Eagles (12-4)

Dallas Cowboys (9-7)

Washington Redskins (4-12)

New York Giants (3-13)

NFC North

Green Bay Packers (11-5)

Chicago Bears (10-6)

Minnesota Vikings (9-7)

Detroit Lions (3-13)

NFC South

New Orleans Saints (13-3)

Atlanta Falcons (12-4)

Carolina Panthers (7-9)

Tampa Bay Buccaneers (5-11)

NFC West

Los Angeles Rams (13-3)

San Francisco 49ers (10-6)

Seattle Seahawks (7-9)

Arizona Cardinals (4-12)

Super Bowl: Los Angeles Rams over Kansas City Chiefs

Offensive Rookie of the Year: Kyler Murray

Defensive Rookie of the Year: Quinnen Williams

Offensive Player of the Year: Le’Veon Bell

Defensive Player of the Year: Joey Bosa

Coach of the Year: Kyle Shanahan

MVP: Carson Wentz

Best Pick

His NFC East predictions were very close to being perfect, being just a few games off of the actual standings and the Giants/Redskins flip flopped by just one game. But I really like the Kyle Shanahan pick for Coach of the Year. He might fall short to Sean McDermott of the Bills, but then again the 49ers are still kicking and boosting his chances every weekend. If they get to the Super Bowl, you gotta love his chances.

Worst Pick

Le’Veon Bell for Offensive Player of the Year. No one knew how he would come back, especially with the Jets, but he was very unimpressive. He finished 24th in the league in rushing yards with just three touchdowns. Not good for a guy who promised his fantasy owners a championship before the season.

Super Bowl: Jacksonville Jaguars over Los Angeles Rams

Offensive Rookie of the Year: Miles Sanders

Defensive Rookie of the Year: Josh Allen

Offensive Player of the Year: Lamar Jackson

Defensive Player of the Year: Jalen Ramsey

Coach of the Year: Doug Marrone

MVP: Carson Wentz

Best Pick

Easily Lamar Jackson with Offensive Player of the Year. He put up great numbers all year long and will probably win the MVP as well. Although Josh Allen for DROY was a very impressive call that might work out if he beats out Nick Bosa.

Worst Pick

We would go with the Jaguars in the Super Bowl, but that pick had fandom bias tied to it. So, straying away from any Jaguars prediction, I’m going with the San Francisco 49ers finishing 6-10 and third in the NFC West. As you know, the 49ers had a sensational year going 13-3 and are one win away from going to the Super Bowl.

Defensive Player of the Year: Aaron Donald

Coach of the Year: Freddie Kitchens

MVP: Baker Mayfield

Best Pick

He perfectly predicted the order of the NFC East while at the same time being very pessimistic about every team, and for good reason.

Worst Pick

I’ll just say anything Cleveland Browns-related. The team had so much hype coming into the season, but failed to live up anywhere close to them, which makes the worst picks easy here. The team’s 14-2 regular season finish, their Super Bowl appearance, Baker Mayfield’s MVP and Offensive Player of the Year awards, and Freddie Kitchens’ Coach of the Year award.

Best Pick

His Super Bowl prediction. With just four teams left, both of his teams are still in the picture and have a good possibility of playing each other. We’ll have to wait another week to see how this one plays out, but it’s a heck of a prediction from before the season even started.

Worst Pick

The 49ers predicted to finish 6-10. Nobody knew how good they would be, especially with Jimmy G out last year. But bouncing back to finish 13-3 made a lot of people’s preseason prediction on them look dumb.

Super Bowl: New Orleans Saints over Kansas City Chiefs

Offensive Player of the Year: Saquon Barkley

Defensive Player of the Year: JJ Watt

Coach of the Year: Adam Gase

MVP: Aaron Rodgers

Best Pick

Like a few others, he perfectly predicted the order of finish in the NFC East. The Kansas City Super Bowl pick is really good too, even though he didn’t have them winning. If they can get past the hot Titans this weekend, then that will solidify his best pick.

Worst Pick

Adam Gase winning Coach of the Year. However, I do like the “going out on a limb” preseason pick. Gase didn’t do an awful job, either. The Jets went 7-9 and had some games where they looked pretty impressive. But they also had some awful games too, which is why Gase isn’t in the conversation for this award.

Offensive Player of the Year: Drew Brees

Defensive Player of the Year: Aaron Donald

Coach of the Year: Andy Reid

MVP: Drew Brees

Best Pick

Defensive Rooke of the Year Nick Bosa was a great pick. Either him or Jaguars’ Josh Allen will win it, but I’ve got a great feeling it will be Bosa. Chances are he hit that pick on the head. Also Kansas City has a pretty good shot at winning the whole thing, which would make his Super Bowl winner prediction right on the money as well. We’ll have to wait a few weeks to see about that one.

Worst Pick

Like others, his San Francisco 49ers pick. He had them with an even worse record than others, at 5-11. Nobody saw that 13-3 season and a chance to go to the Super Bowl coming.

Best Pick

I correctly picked the finishing order for three divisions (AFC East, AFC South, and NFC East). Also being just four games off in the entire AFC South division was a pretty good prediction.

Worst Pick

There’s several ways you could go here. I was very confident in the Bears and had them going 13-3 and winning the division. I also had the infamous 49ers pick, where I had them going 6-10. But I’m going with my Jared Goff Offensive Player of the Year pick. He seemed to take a step back this year and was very unimpressive.

Best Pick

Correctly picking our hometown Panthers’ dismal season at 5-11. Everyone else had a little more confidence in them, but he seemed to see it coming. Also his Chiefs to the Super Bowl pick looks pretty solid at the moment and if they can beat the streaking Titans it will be his best pick.

Worst Pick

Like Austyn, JScott let his fandom get the best of him while making his picks, as he went with the perfect season for his Cowboys, including a Super Bowl win. So, we’ll set that bias pick aside and make another one. Or two. Or three. First, he had the Bills at 3-13. Second, he had the Vikings at 2-14. And lastly (and the worst pick), he had the 49ers at a 2-14 record and prepping for perhaps the top pick in the draft at this time.
