2019 NFL 1st Round Mock Draft

It has been a while since I have done one of these, but I’m gonna give it a whirl this year. I usually do an NBA mock every year, but I normally just watch the NFL Draft. NFL is different from the NBA in the sense that teams draft more on a need basis rather than a talent basis. It will be interesting as always and the future of many great college football players will start this weekend. This year, the draft is taking place in Nashville and it should be an exciting first round tonight.

*This Mock Draft will not contain potential trades.

-      1: Arizona Cardinals – Kyler Murray, QB (Oklahoma)

At this point, this seems like the most likely scenario. If Arizona decides to trade the pick and keep Josh Rosen, that would also make sense, but Murray at number one seems like a given, regardless of which jersey he will be wearing next season.

-      2: San Francisco 49ers – Nick Bosa, DE (Ohio State)

It has been reported that the 49ers are down to Nick Bosa and Quinnen Williams for the second pick. Here is a classic scenario where I think they draft need over want. Don’t get me wrong, Bosa is super talented and should be a great addition for the Niners, but Williams seemed like their guy at one point.

-      3: New York Jets – Quinnen Williams, DT (Alabama)

It was rumored that the Jets may be looking to trade down in this draft. If they don’t, look for Williams to go here. The Jets don’t have a second-round pick and that could be a deciding factor whether or not they trade the pick.

-      4: Oakland Raiders – Ed Oliver, DT (Houston)

This seems like this will be about the furthest that Oliver will drop. He could go one spot lower, but I wouldn’t count on it. Oliver has a ton of potential and he could be the guy that helps put Gruden’s Raiders back on track. There was talk of the Raiders making a surprise pick here, but we’ll see. I mean, I would pick Oliver based on this picture alone.

-      5: Tampa Bay Buccaneers – Devin White, LB (LSU)

I am down to two picks for Tampa Bay, White and Josh Allen. New coach Bruce Arians is high on a couple of prospects, but he didn’t mention names. White seems like one of those guys and I think he will be playing in Tampa this Fall.

-      6: New York Giants – Josh Allen, DE/OLB (Kentucky)

They’re saying that the Giants are high on Duke QB Daniel Jones, but aren’t sure if he will be around for their 17th pick. If they don’t draft the QB at 6, look for Allen to be the guy they pick.

-      7: Jacksonville Jaguars – Jawaan Taylor, OT (Florida)

Nick Foles is the new QB for the Jags and he needs protection. Jacksonville also needs targets for Foles to throw to, but that is another story. You can’t really go wrong with OL in the draft in any scenario, in my opinion.

-      8: Detroit Lions – Devin Bush, LB (Michigan)

I think the Lions trade here, but if they don’t, I think they’ll take the best available LB.

-      9: Buffalo Bills – Jonah Williams, OT/G (Alabama)

Josh Allen was running for his life last year, which is a key indicator that he needs an upgrade to his Offensive Line. Jonah Williams will provide that need and then some.

-      10: Denver Broncos – TJ Hockenson, TE (Iowa)

Many scouts are considering the Iowa Tight End to be a game-changer. The Broncos need offensive weapons with Joe Flacco leading the offense. There aren’t many WRs scheduled to go first round and the ones that are, are going later.  Hockenson seems like a can’t miss prospect at TE.

-      11: Cincinnati Bengals – Andre Dillard, OT (Washington State)

Dillard seems like their guy here. Cincinnati has a new coach and a whole new system, but I think they go with a smart pick here. Dillard’s status as a first-round talent is up in the air with many scouts, but like I say, you can’t go wrong with O-Linemen. Obviously you can, but it’s rare.

-      12: Green Bay Packers – Christian Wilkins, DT (Clemson)

I wanted to predict Montez Sweat for this pick, but that would mean he would have to move to LB, which I don’t think he will. A lot of teams are high on Wilkins and we could see a team move up for him.

-      13: Miami Dolphins – Montez Sweat, DE (Mississippi State)

If Wilkins is off the board, then Miami I think Miami will go with Sweat. 4.41 is the glaring statistic for this edge rusher. He is 6’6, 260 and he ran a 4.41 40-yard dash! There are reports saying he may drop out of the first round. Why? Am I missing something here? He does have a heart condition, but it shouldn’t affect him on the field. I’m interested to see where he lands.

-      14: Atlanta Falcons – Dexter Lawrence, DT (Clemson)

Atlanta is one of the favorites to move up in the draft, but if they don’t, they should still draft D-Line. If Devin Bush happens to be available, don’t look for him to go any lower than this.

-      15: Washington Redskins – Drew Lock, QB (Missouri)

It appears that Washington is QB shopping and they could take a few approaches with this. I have a gut feeling that they go with Drew Lock here, but they could go with Haskins or Jones with this pick.

-      16: Carolina Panthers – Brian Burns, DE/OLB (Florida State)

Burns makes a lot of sense for the Panthers. They desperately need outside pass rushing and if Sweat is available here, then I think they’ll snag him up, but Burns should be here at 16.

-      17: New York Giants – Daniel Jones, QB (Duke)

Like I said earlier, the Giants are high on Jones, but the only possible place that I can see him going between picks 7-16 is at number 15 with the Redskins. If the Giants can walk out of the first round with Josh Allen and the QB that they want, it would be a huge success for them.

-      18: Minnesota Vikings – Cody Ford, OL (Oklahoma)

By my calculations, it looks like Good Ol’ JR will be a Vikings fan next year. The former Sooner is expected to go a little higher, but I think this is the perfect place for him.  Minnesota absolutely need more help at OL.

-      19: Tennessee Titans – Garrett Bradbury, OL (NC State)

I think this makes the most sense for Tennessee. Their defense is a very solid unit, but the biggest concern for the Titans is keeping their QB healthy. If Mariota can have a fully healthy season, I feel like they can be they team that they want to be. Bradbury is a very athletic OL and he would be a perfect addition to the Tennessee offense. If any high-level OLB prospects are available at 19, then they could go that route, because of Brian Orakpo’s retirement.

-      20: Pittsburgh Steelers – Byron Murphy, CB (Washington)

I feel like they want to go with a LB here, but at this point in the draft, it would be a reach for them. They can address their needs in the secondary with this pick here.

-      21: Seattle Seahawks – Rashan Gary, DL (Michigan)

If Gary is still on the board at this pick, then Seattle would get a steal. The Seahawks just traded Frank Clark and they could immediately replace him with their first-round pick.

-      22: Baltimore Ravens – Clelin Ferrell, DE/OLB (Clemson)

If he is available at 22, the Ravens take him. It’s likely he won’t fall this far, but I feel like Baltimore will not let him slip any further.

-      23: Houston Texans – Dalton Risner, OL (Kansas State)

Houston must address their need at Offensive Line. A lot of the higher first-round potential at OL is off the board, but I think this is a good value.

-      24: Oakland Raiders – Jeffery Simmons, DT (Mississippi State)

I have a hard time believing that the Raiders will still be in possession of this pick by the time it rolls around, but it seems like they could go with someone like Simmons. He is a controversial pick, but it’s clear that Jon Gruden isn’t really concerned with controversy. They could go with Josh Jacobs here also.

-      25: Philadelphia Eagles – Rock Ya-Sin, CB (Temple)

It is possible they could go with a WR here, but they really could use a good CB.

-      26: Indianapolis Colts – DK Metcalf, WR (Mississippi)

I think Metcalf will be the first receiver off the board. He seems like another can’t-miss prospect with the intangibles to possibly become a star. A lot of mocks say that the Colts will take Jeffery Simmons, which could be a believable scenario.

-      27: Oakland Raiders – Greedy Williams, CB (LSU)

This is the last of Oakland’s picks in the first round and they need a little bit of everything, but CB is a glaring need. Greedy Williams is the best available CB in the draft.

-      28: Los Angeles Chargers – Deandre Baker, CB (Georgia)

The Chargers are a team that doesn’t really have glaring needs, but they could use some secondary help.

-      29: Seattle Seahawks – Johnathan Abram, S (Mississippi State)

I had the Seahawks going Defensive Line with their first pick in the round, but I think they will shape up their secondary need. This is a good value at this point in the draft.

-      30: Green Bay Packers – Noah Fant, TE (Iowa)

It looks like the Packers are looking to replace Jimmy Graham in the near future and Fant would be a good candidate to do so. If he is still available, look for Green Bay to have a new TE. It is crazy to think Iowa could have two Tight Ends going in the first round.

-      31: Los Angeles Rams – Greg Little, OL (Mississippi)

The Rams don’t really need anything, but they could always solidify their O-Line. I expect them to do just that tonight.

-      32: New England Patriots – Kaleb McGary, OL (Washington)

If any of the Iowa Tight Ends are on the board when New England is choosing, they are almost locks, but don’t expect it. Patriots are always in contention around playoff time and I don’t expect this year to be any different. There are a lot of possibilities for New England at 32, so they could get creative.
