AEW Power Rankings: Week of December 14th

It’s difficult to believe that AEW has only been on TV for 11 weeks. I think that they’re still doing a fantastic job of getting new talent over and establishing the star power that they already have. We are getting close to the end of 2019 and they announce a new PPV coming in February and I was wondering when the next one was going to be. It looks like they are probably going to have one every quarter for the time being and that should be sufficient for now. My only problem, and it is a minor one at the moment, is the fact that there are so many events held in Chicago. It seems like all of their bigger events are in Chicago and I really don’t know the reason behind this. I get that they want to establish a home base, but I think it could leave a sour taste among fans outside of the Chicago area after a while. Other than Double or Nothing in Las Vegas, they haven’t held an event on the west coast and other than the Charlotte and Jacksonville event, there hasn’t been any more events in the Southeast. It is something to keep an eye on, but it isn’t a huge concern currently. This week’s programming was solid and we saw some rather new faces in action this week, so it felt a little different picking a Top 5 this week. Here are my Power Rankings for the week.

-       5: Big Swole

AEW

AEW

When I noticed that Big Swole was going to be making her Dynamite debut, I immediately thought that this was going to be a huge shot for her. The match wasn’t awesome, but it served its intended purpose. Swole looked fine in this contest against Emi Sakura and it looks like she could be getting some more opportunities in the near future. She seems to be over with the crowd and I guess we will see what is next for Swole.

-       4: The Butcher, Blade, and Bunny

AEW

AEW

This is an odd trio that has emerged over the last couple of weeks, but they finally got their chance to prove themselves in the ring this week. The Butcher and Blade faced the makeshift team of Cody and QT Marshall and won. I didn’t really like the fact that Cody was in the mix at the moment, but it made sense. Cody didn’t take the fall and that was a good thing, but the main focus of the match was the trio above. I’m interested to see if Bunny gets a decent push from this in the coming weeks.

-       3: MJF

It is already fun to hate MJF and I’m loving it. It looks like he had found a bodyguard in Wardlow at the moment and this week, he responded to Cody’s challenge. It appears that he accepts the challenge, but under a few circumstances that will be announced in the coming weeks. MJF’s ability to agitate an audience this early in his tenure is a great sign for him moving forward and if it hasn’t been iterated enough already, he has the most star potential of any performer on the card. Staggering this storyline out is the right call and it looks like we will be getting this match at Revolution in February.

-       2: The Young Bucks

The Bucks were in and won the main event on Wednesday night against Ortiz and Santana. We saw them in a Texas Street Fight and it was a solid match, but I thought it was a little rushed. In all reality, it wasn’t very rushed, but anything below about 15 minutes seems rushed in a Young Bucks match. The Bucks have been on a roll lately and it appears that they are likely the next suitors for the Tag Team Championships. It is about time and clearly they deserve this opportunity, but I’m interested to see when the match is going to happen.

-       1: Jon Moxley

AEW

AEW

Mox tops the rankings yet again and the feud between he and Jericho is really starting to heat up. I don’t think that I have said this before, but I have certainly been thinking lately that Moxley is reminding me a lot of an earlier version of the ECW version of Steve Austin. It is awesome to see him get unleashed and watch him do his thing. He defeated Alex Reynolds in the opener in just 14 seconds, but the big thing out of this segment was the confrontation between he and Jericho. Jericho offered him a spot in The Inner Circle, but if wrestling history has taught us anything, the loose cannon doesn’t squad up. He takes the world on by himself and honestly, Moxley is likely going to be the next champion and if they do it right, it will be an awesome build to the match.
