Liverpool Score Late…..Again

Liverpool survived yet another scare on Saturday as they were down a 1 goal with 3 minutes remaining in regular time and somehow not only scored one to tie but scored twice to win the game. Aston Villa fans were all ready to celebrate what would have been a big upset by the newly promoted team but those celebrations came quickly to an end as Andrew Robertson leveled the game in the 87th minute and then Sadio Mane scored the game winning header in the last minute of the 5 minutes of added time. Heartbreak for one side and jubilation on the other that this might actually be Liverpool’s year as everything seems to be going their way in the early going of this season.

They say these are the types of games you have to win if you want to be champions. And we’ve seen it multiple times already for Liverpool, when they’ve not been the outright better side and somehow pull off the win. Just last weekend, Liverpool found themselves down 1-0 to Tottenham, only to comeback in the 2nd half and score the game winner in the 75th minute via penalty. The week before that, Liverpool needed an 85th minute goal from Adam Lallana to save a tie vs Manchester United. The matchweek before that, Liverpool needed a penalty in extra time to beat Leicester City. Do you see the trend here? Since their match against Sheffield United in late September, Liverpool have needed a goal in the 70th minute or later to win or save a tie in every Premier League match. So the question is, are Liverpool fans happy that their team is squeaking out wins despite not playing that great or are they concerned about the overall trend of the team not putting in good performances?

Other Notes:

  • 13 points is the astonishingly low point total that both Manchester United and Tottenham have through 11 games. Unbelievable. Who goes first, Pochettino or Solskjaer? My money is on Pochettino as Tottenham’s terrible form started back in February of last season.

  • Chelsea have now won their last 5 games in the Premier League and sit just 2 pts behind Manchester City who are in 2nd place. Tammy Abraham continues to impress as he has now scored 9 goals in the Premier League, which puts him in 2nd place for top scorer, and Pulisic added another coming off his hat-trick last week.

  • VAR is the worst thing ever. I hate everything about it. Chelsea dominated Watford the entire game and were up 2-0 when VAR turned the match on its head in the 80th minute. Jorginho made contact with Delofeu inside the box, and I mean barely made contact. The ref went to VAR and decided to award a penalty. It was truly one of the worst decision I’ve seen made. Yet that’s all it took for Watford to be down only 1 goal in a game that they were clearly outclassed and give them a chance to steal a point. Chelsea luckily held on to all three points but add this decision to the long list of why VAR is making the game worst. Get rid of VAR, if a mistake is going to be made I would rather it be made by the ref on the field, rather than stopping the game to view a replay and still making the incorrect decision.

  • Leicester City continue their red hot form with another win over Crystal Palace. Jamie Vardy is now the top scorer in the league with 10 goals. Awesome to see him stick around at Leicester over the years and not leave for the big money.
