The song was originally written by Kris Kristofferson and performed by Roger Miller in 1969, but the song is probably most famous for being performed by Janis Joplin. The interesting thing about Janis Joplin’s version is it was released 2 years later in 1971, which happened to be a year after Joplin’s untimely death. Joplin’s version would top the US singles chart, which made it only the 2nd song to ever be released posthumously and become a #1 single. The other song to do so was Sittin’ On The Dock Of The Bay by Otis Redding.
