Fabregas Says Goodbye

Cesc Fabregas donned the Chelsea jersey one last time yesterday in their FA Cup meeting against Nottingham Forest in which Chelsea would end up winning 2-0. While his transfer to Monaco hasn’t been officially announced by either club, yesterday’s farewell by the club, fans and Cesc himself proved it’s all but official. Fabregas is set to join the Ligue 1 side, Monaco FC and join up with his former Arsenal teammate, Thierry Henry, who is now the head coach. Fabregas’ career has been quite the journey. He started his career at Arsenal as a 16 yr old in the 03-04 season. That just happens to be the same season that Arsenal became the only team in Premier League history to win the league and go undefeated in the process. Unfortunately for Fabregas, he didn’t play a single Premier League match that year so he missed out on a winner’s medal, which would continue to avoid him in his time at Arsenal. The next season, as a 17 yr old kid, Cesc would appear in 33 Premier League matches for Arsenal and the rest in history. Cesc would play the next 7 seasons at Arsenal even becoming the team captain and a club legend in the process but was never able to win the Premier League. Fabregas would eventually leave Arsenal for Barcelona in the summer of 2011 at the age of 24. He would go onto win the League title in Spain with Barca along with a handful of cups. That brings us to the summer of 2014. With Mourinho back in charge at Chelsea, the club would bring the Spaniard back to the Premier League for a fee of around $35 million. What a steal that would turn out to be. Also, this transfer would prove to burn a lot of bridges with fans of his former club, Arsenal. How dare their former captain join their arch rival?! Probably one of the best moments of Fabregas’ tenure with Chelsea was simply the outrage it caused to Arsenal fans.

Well Fabregas would get his wish of a Premier League title in just his first season with Chelsea, again something he couldn’t achieve in 7 seasons at Arsenal and something they haven’t done since that 03-04 season, but who’s counting? And then just 2 seasons later he would get his 2nd Premier League title with Chelsea in the 16-17 season. Fabregas was a mainstay in the starting lineup over the last four seasons tallying 41 assists and 15 goals. Cesc was truly amazing in those both of the title runs with 18 assists in the 14-15 season, which is just 2 shy of the single season record, and 12 assists in the 16-17 title season. Fabregas never played less than 29 games in a season over the last 4 years but this season, Fabregas has found himself out of favor with the new head coach and has only appeared in 6 of the 21 matches thus far. Fabregas is still only 31 yrs old and will be turning 32 in May, so he’s still got a handful of years left in the tank but unfortunately his time at Chelsea has seemed to run out. Pretty incredible that he’s only 31 yrs old considering he’s been playing professional football since 2003

Here’s some highlights from his time at Chelsea:

Thanks for the memories Cesc.

It’s starting to get sad how many players are gone from those title runs. Fabregas just joins the list of Nemaja Matic, Diego Costa, Branislav Ivanovic, Thibaut Courtois (good riddance) of players at Chelsea for both the 15 and 17 title. Only players left are Eden Hazard(who could be gone this summer), Willian, Gary Cahill(who could be gone this January as well) and Cesar Azpilicueta.
