In the midst of that incredible AFC Championship game yesterday and all the postgame highlights and tweets, I came across an interesting factoid on Twitter. You see, one of the things that makes the NFL so good is the parity, or at least that’s what I thought. Other than the Patriots being the one team that you could always count on for the last 20 yrs to make the playoffs, it’s been pretty up and down for most other teams. Every team has won their division at least 2 times since 2002 outside of the AFC East, except for the Browns, Jaguars, Raiders and the Lions, and of course every team has been to playoffs in that time frame. You go into every season and it feels like there is at lest 10-12 teams who have a legit shot at winning the Superbowl. To me it’s up there with baseball in terms of any team being able to win and the parity, so that’s what makes this factoid even crazier. In the last 16 years just 1 QB has represented the AFC in the Superbowl not name Brady, Manning or Roethlisberger. His name, Joe Falcco. Joe Flacco lead the 2012 Ravens past the Patriots (surprise) in the AFC title game and then on to win the Superbowl vs the San Francisco 49ers. Outside of that one anomaly, Brady has represented the AFC 9 times, Manning 4 times and Roethlisberger 3 times. The NFC on the other hand is quite the opposite and truly showcases the parity as only 2 QBs have represented the NFC multiple times since 2002 and that is Eli Manning 2 times and Russell Wilson 2 times. So congrats Joe Flacco on being the 1 QB in the last 16 years to defy all the odds.
